After finishing
his political career one year ago, he is currently engaged as a lecturer by a
number of academic activities and participates in the activities of some
european think-tanks.
From April 2004 until February 2015 has been a member of the European Commission; first as responsable of Economic and Monetary affairs and since February 2010 as Vice-President and Commission in charge of Competition Policy.
Before serving at the EU Commission, from December 1982 until March 1991 has been a member of the Spanish Government, as cabinet minister of Labour and Social Security and Public Administration.
Almunia was elected member of the Spanish Parliament (Congreso de los Diputados), representing the Madrid constituency, in eight legislatures in a row, from 1979 to 2004.
He has been the leader of the PSOE (1997-2000), and its parlamentary leader (1994-1997).
He obtained Degrees in Law and Economics, University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), and followed post-graduate studies at École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris, 1970-1971) and at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1991)
Has been Associate Professor of Labor Law and Social Security at the University of Alcalá (Madrid); Director of a program on "Redistribution and Equality" at the Fundación Argentaria; and founder and Director of the progressive think-tank "Laboratorio de Alternativas".
Born in Bilbao (Spain) the 17 Juin 1948, is married with Milagros Candela and has two children.
